Understanding Types of Lubricating Grease & Customer's need
FUNCTIONS OF GREASE
A satisfactory grease must:
REDUCE friction and wear under various operating conditions.
PROTECT against rust and corrosion.
PREVENT dirt, water and other contaminants form
entering the parts being lubricated.
MAINTAIN structure and consistency during long periods
of use.
PERMIT free motion of parts at low temperature and itself
pump freely at those temperatures.
CHARACTERISTICS
The characteristics of greases are controlled by the physical
and chemical properties of the three elements contained in
grease:
OIL
THICKENER
ADDITIVES
GREASE LUBRICATION - TYPES OF GREASE
SOAP - THICKENED GREASE
Grease manufacture varies with the thickener used. Soap
thickened greases are like Aluminium Soap Grease, Calcium
Soap Grease, Sodium Soap Grease, Lithium Soap Grease,
Barium Soap Grease etc.
NON-SOAP GREASE
There are, at present, THRE major types of non soap greases - organo-clay/bentonite grease, Polyurea Grease, Silica
Grease.
DIFFERENT MANUFACTURING PROCESS AND
CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS. EACH WITH
UNIQUE TYPE OF PRODUCT.
GREASE STRUCTURE
Or said that grease makers pulled grease apart between the
thumb and forefinger to determine the structure of the grease.
They were looking to see if it had a short or long fiber
structure; if the grease was stringy, smooth, buttery,
adhesive, etc.
GREASE STORAGE
Storage behavior of greases depends upon the viscosity of
the base oil and the type and amount of thickener.
The slight changes in appearance of a grease in storage
have no effect on the performance of the product. Wellinhibited
greases retain their quality in storage for many
years.
It is preferred to store grease in an indoor area and keep the
container sealed. Use the oldest containers first and always
clean grease handling equipment before using. Seal
container tightly to avoid contamination.
SELECTION OF GREASE
Selection of grease are predicted on the following:
Length of expected service
Expected temperature range of the application - cold or hot
/ low or high. Low temperature applications can be handled
by using a smooth-texture grease. A softer grease like
NLGI 1 or 2 would assist the movement of the grease in or
to the application. Remember: high speeds - light oils: low
speeds heavy oil.
Speed of the application - slow or fast
Cost-effectiveness of the product for the applications.
Load of machine.
